In the 1961 episode of the Twilight Zone, “The Invaders” we came face to face with the difference size may play between humanity and extraterrestrials in a large way. Of course it wasn’t the first time the idea that aliens may be extremely small (or extremely large compared to us) but it did become a cultural staple that suggested to us that our own understanding of even the most basic things could change significantly if we were to expand beyond our own world. And a few principles in energy and time travel suggest that future explorations into time and space may not be quite as big as we once thought.

The X-37B is one of those spacecraft that has set the conspiracy theory crowd ablaze with speculation. Unlike previous orbital missions, this new craft has been kept completely secret from nose to stern and everyone is asking what all the hubbub is about. But as the craft, originally intended to come down 270 days later since its launch in April of last year, remains in orbit even longer than expected, some are beginning to wonder if something has gone awry or if this is all part of the original plan with the top secret space shuttle.

Charles Dickens, the father of the legendary Christmas Story about an elderly man who is haunted by ghosts from the past, and representatives of the past present and future, was himself a believer in the scholarly pursuit of the paranormal. Of course this was coupled with a healthy dose of skepticism over the powers many of the mediums of the time claimed to have. In the end Dickens became most inclined to believe that the mind itself was a powerful gateway to realms that remain to this day unknown. And his ghosts in a Christmas Carol reflected the philosophy.

In the long lasting search for a fusion reaction capable of producing more energy than is required to power the device itself, there have been a number of breakthroughs but ultimately none that result in a fusion reactor capable of generating power. And now scientists have created a method of producing plasma using only a few dollars worth of components in a lab. The method emits light bright enough to be seen in a darkened space or, in some rare cases, in sunlight.

South Korea, one of the hopefuls at the head of robotic development has introduced several robotic sentries that look more like toys than actual guards in one prison. The guards, which are being distributed in the city of Pohang are part of an effort to reduce the work load on prison guards to ensure that fewer guards can prevent violence and suicides while in the prison walls. Is this the candy coated future of mechanized law enforcement?

11/27/11- The Belgian UFO Wave of 1989 

Rarely in the culture of UFOs do we actually see and hear of such an incredible mass sighting as the Belgian UFO wave of 1989. Not only were thousands of witnesses reporting the event independently, radar stations reported contact with an object moving incredibly fast, and an F-16 was launched to intercept the mysterious object before photographs and finally video was taken of it. But the focus this year has been on one piece of evidence collected during the events which proved to be a fake.

11/18/11- Mysterious Nuclear Radiation Blankets Europe 

Trace amounts of nuclear radiation have been detected in several places throughout Europe, but no one knows precisely where it’s coming from. Experts are suggesting it is likely not related to the Fukushima disaster – possibly because wind currents would have to travel across most of the globe before reaching the Czech republic where it was discovered. The IAEA has stated that the levels are not nearly high enough to cause health risks any time soon, but they are curious over where the mystery radiation could be coming from.

The Russian Probe, Phobos Grunt will be crashing back to Earth within the next two months – so say Russian scientists who are disappointed at the failure of their latest project. The probe was first launched last Wednesday destined for the Martian Moon Phobos. And it seems this is only one of several ill fated Russian probes heading toward the Martian Moon only to have their journey cut short. Is there a conspiracy in the works? Or is there a more logical explanation for this strange occurrence? With scientists racing against the clock to correct the error expected to destroy the Probe entirely, it’s still not entirely clear what went wrong.
